Main Stages of the Plastic Production Process

plastic production process

The plastic production process is mainly divided into three stages: raw material pretreatment, core molding, and post-processing. The core logic of the production process is consistent across different types of plastics. The specific steps are as follows:

1. First Step: Raw Material Pretreatment

Plastic production begins with raw material pretreatment, the core of which is the preparation of basic materials that meet performance requirements:

Basic Raw Material Preparation: The main raw material is synthetic resin, and then plasticizers, stabilizers, colorants, fillers, and other additives are added according to product requirements, and mixed evenly.

Pretreatment Operations: The raw materials are dried and screened to remove impurities, ensuring the fluidity and uniformity of the raw materials and avoiding defects such as bubbles and black spots after molding.

2. Second Step: Core Molding Process

Different molding methods are selected based on the product shape and application. There are three main processes:

Injection Molding: Similar to the principle of a syringe, molten plastic is injected under high pressure into a closed mold. After cooling, the mold is opened to obtain the finished product. Suitable for producing complex and precision parts such as mobile phone cases, toys, and appliance casings. Most ABS plastic products are produced using this process.

Extrusion Molding: Molten plastic is continuously extruded through a mold of a specific shape, directly forming the product. Suitable for producing long, strip-shaped products such as pipes, sheets, and plastic granules. The granulation process primarily uses extrusion.

The extrusion granulation process for plastic granules: Molten plastic is heated and extruded from a mold into strips → rapidly cooled with cold water → fed into a pelletizer to cut into uniform granules.

Blow molding: A plastic preform is first extruded, then inflated using gas pressure to fit it into a mold. After cooling, a hollow product is obtained. This process is used to produce hollow products such as mineral water bottles, oil drums, and plastic buckets.

3. Third step: Post-processing

After molding, further finishing is required to become the finished product:

Demolding and trimming: Remove flash and excess material from the gate, trim the edges to ensure a clean appearance.

Annealing treatment: For products requiring high dimensional accuracy, annealing is performed to eliminate internal stress and prevent deformation and cracking during use.

Surface finishing: Surface treatments such as painting, printing, and electroplating are applied as needed to improve appearance and performance.

Qingdao Xueyu Molding Products Co., Ltd. is mainly engaged in the design and manufacturing of injection molds, injection molding and secondary processing (spraying, pad printing, ultrasonic welding, stamping), etc. For more information about plastic production process, please contact us.
