Plastic Sheet Manufacturing Process and Characteristics
Plastic sheet manufacturing processes are diverse, encompassing multiple stages from raw material preparation to finished product output. Below are some major manufacturing processes and their characteristics:
1. Extrusion Method
Process Flow: Plastic raw materials are mixed with additives, heated and melted through an extruder, and then extruded into continuous sheets through a T-head or fishtail die. The sheets are cooled and shaped by cooling rollers, and finally wound or cut to the required size.
Characteristics: Extrusion is the main method for mass production of plastic sheets, offering high production efficiency. By adjusting extruder parameters and die design, sheets of different thicknesses, widths, and shapes can be produced. Extruded sheets have a smooth surface and uniform thickness, suitable for various thermoforming processes.
2. Calendering Method
Process Flow: Plastic raw materials are mixed in a high-speed mixer, then fed into an internal mixer for internal mixing, followed by compounding and plasticizing in an open mill, and finally calendered into sheets of the required thickness. The sheets are cooled and wound to obtain the finished product.
Characteristics: Calendered sheets have high thickness precision and good surface quality. Suitable for producing thermoplastic sheets such as PVC and PVDC. Calendering equipment is large, requires high precision, and has many auxiliary devices.
3. Casting Method
Process Flow: Liquid plastic is poured into a mold, and after polymerization, it solidifies to obtain a sheet.
Characteristics: Sheets produced by casting have unique physical and chemical properties. Suitable for producing plastic sheets for specific purposes, such as optical materials and advertising boards. Casting has a long production cycle and relatively low production efficiency.
4. Thermoforming Method
Process Flow: Using pre-produced plastic sheets as raw materials, after heating and softening, they are deformed and conformed to the mold contour using vacuum, air pressure, or mechanical pressure. After cooling and solidification, the product is obtained.
Characteristics: Thermoforming is a secondary processing method for plastics, suitable for manufacturing various open plastic shell products. Mold costs are low, equipment investment is small, and it is suitable for producing thin-walled, large-size products. Products produced by thermoforming have complex shapes and precise dimensions, and are widely used in packaging, electronics, medical, and other fields.
