types of plastic extrusion process

Types of plastic extrusion process can be categorized into the following types based on plasticizing method, feeding method, and equipment:

1. Classification by Plasticizing Method:

Dry Extrusion: Plastic is melted by heating, and plasticizing and pressurization can be carried out in the same equipment. Its characteristics include simple cooling during shaping, uniform plasticizing, and avoidance of overheating. Suitable for most thermoplastics and some thermosetting plastics.

Wet Extrusion: Plastic is fully softened with solvent. Plasticizing and pressurization must be two separate processes. Shaping requires more complex solvent removal, and solvent recovery must also be considered. Its characteristics include uniform plasticizing, but the process is complex and its applicability is limited. Limited to the extrusion of nitrocellulose and a few cellulose acetate plastics.

2. Classification by Feeding Method:

Continuous Extrusion: Material passes continuously through the extruder, achieving continuous production. Its characteristics include high production efficiency, stable product quality, and suitability for large-scale production. Mainly uses screw extruders, including single-screw and multi-screw extruders.

Intermittent Extrusion: Material is added to the extruder in batches, resulting in discontinuous production. The main characteristic is lower production efficiency, but it is suitable for small-batch, multi-variety production. It mainly uses a plunger extruder, where the plunger applies high extrusion pressure to the material, making it suitable for molding plastics with extremely high viscosity and poor flowability.

3. Classification by Equipment Type

Single-screw extruder: A single rotating screw is installed in a heated barrel, with heating and cooling devices located in sections outside the barrel. Its characteristics include simple structure, easy manufacturing, low equipment cost, and convenient installation and commissioning. It is the most widely used extrusion equipment in production and is suitable for extruding various plastics.

Multi-screw extruder: Two or more screws rotate in a heated barrel. It can be divided into intermeshing and non-intermeshing types, combined and non-combined types, co-rotating and counter-rotating types, etc. Its characteristics include good plasticizing and mixing effects, high production efficiency, and suitability for extruding highly filled and high-viscosity materials. It has developed rapidly in recent years, and its applications are gradually expanding, such as for plastic blending, filling, and reinforcement.

4. Other Special Extrusion Processes

Reactive extrusion process: Continuously polymerizes monomers and modifies existing polymers. The key features of this process are the diversification and functionalization of polymer properties, continuous production, simple operation, and economic viability. It has attracted widespread attention from the global chemical and polymer materials science and engineering communities and is developing rapidly in industry.

Solid-state extrusion: This process involves extruding polymers through a die at below their melting point. Its key feature is significantly improved mechanical properties of the finished product, but it typically uses a single-plunger extruder and is an intermittent operation. It is suitable for producing high-performance products in specific fields.

Co-extrusion: This process is completed using two or more extruders, allowing for increased cross-sectional area of the extruded product and the creation of composite products with special structures, different colors, and different materials. Its key features are the diversification or multifunctionality of the product, enhancing its quality. It is widely used in agricultural films, packaging films, and other fields.

Qingdao Xueyu Molding Products Co., Ltd. is mainly engaged in the design and manufacturing of injection molds, injection molding and secondary processing (spraying, pad printing, ultrasonic welding, stamping), etc. For more information about types of plastic extrusion process, please contact us.
