How to Optimize the Cost of Aerospace Plastic Injection Molds

aerospace plastic injection mold

Optimizing the cost of aerospace-grade plastic injection molds hinges on achieving a balance between cost reduction and quality through systematic cost reduction across the entire process, without compromising core performance characteristics such as aerospace-grade precision and resistance to extreme working conditions.

Product Structure Pre-Optimization

Unified Wall Thickness Design: Eliminates localized thick sections and abrupt changes in wall thickness. Thicker sections are transitioned with reduced-thickness transitions, avoiding the need for additional complex shrinkage compensation and irregularly shaped cooling structures, directly reducing machining time.

Simplified Undercuts and Slides: Without affecting assembly functionality, small undercuts are merged, and ineffective lateral structures are eliminated. Lateral demolding is replaced with direct demolding, significantly reducing the number of ejector pins and slides, and shrinking the mold base size.

Lightweight Ribs and Pillars: Redundant reinforcing ribs are merged, and the height of unnecessary screw pillars is reduced. Dead corners in the mold's pointed and thin steel sections are eliminated, reducing the hidden costs of insert disassembly and subsequent mold repair and welding.

Mold Design and Precise Material Control

Execute DFM (Design for Manufacturability) review: Before mold opening, identify design defects such as sharp corners, lack of draft, and excessive undercuts to avoid the extra investment required for repeated mold modifications later.

Promote standardized design: Use standard mold bases, standard ejector pins, and other common accessories, eliminating non-standard customized structures. Simplify venting and water channel layouts in non-critical areas to prevent steel waste caused by over-design.

Graded matching of mold steel: Use P20 and 718H pre-hardened steel for low-volume, common appearance parts; S136 for high-polish transparent parts; and H13 hardened steel for high glass fiber wear scenarios, avoiding cost waste from using high-specification materials for low-performance parts.

End-to-End Processing and Supply Chain Optimization

Control redundant processing steps: Non-critical appearance surfaces do not require high-gloss mirror polishing; milling is sufficient, reducing processing time and costs by approximately 15%.

Reduce the number of trial moldings: Introduce professional mold flow analysis early on to predict issues such as insufficient filling and warping, avoiding material and time losses from multiple trial moldings.

Matching suitable suppliers: Avoid blindly pursuing low-price traps. Choose manufacturers with experience in aerospace mold processing, comprehensively evaluate their process capabilities rather than simply comparing prices, and avoid hidden costs of rework during mass production.
