How to Extend the Lifespan of 3D Printed Plastic Injection Molds
Extending the lifespan of 3D printed plastic injection molds requires a four-pronged approach: material selection, design optimization, process control, and maintenance. This can significantly improve their durability and production stability.
1. Select High-Temperature and High-Wear-Resistant Materials
Prioritize high-performance printing materials such as ULTEM (PEEK type) and PA6-GF (glass fiber reinforced nylon), which have heat distortion temperatures exceeding 180°C, high tensile strength, and are suitable for multiple injection cycles.
Use Metal Coatings to Reinforce the Surface: Spraying nickel-phosphorus alloy or DLC diamond-like carbon coatings onto the mold cavity surface can significantly improve wear resistance and demolding performance, extending lifespan by over 30%.
2. Optimize Mold Structure Design
Integrate conformal cooling channels: Utilize the advantages of 3D printing to design cooling channels that fit the cavity, achieving uniform heat dissipation and reducing thermal stress cracks.
Add reinforcing ribs and support structures: Thicken or add internal supports in stress-bearing areas to prevent deformation.
Properly set the draft angle to reduce ejection resistance and prevent edge chipping.
3. Control Injection Molding Process Parameters
Reduce Injection Pressure and Temperature: Compared to steel molds, 3D printed plastic injection molds have lower strength. It is recommended to control the injection pressure below 80MPa and the barrel temperature 10–20°C below the material's heat distortion temperature.
Extend Cooling Time: Ensure the plastic is fully cured before opening the mold to reduce thermal shock.
Use Lubricating Mold Release Agent: Spray with a water-based mold release agent to reduce friction damage. Clean residue after each use.
4. Standardize Usage and Maintenance Procedures
Inspect every 50–100 cycles: Observe for microcracks, deformation, or interlayer delamination, and repair promptly.
Regularly Clean Residual Plastic and Dust: Use a soft brush or compressed air to remove stains from the mold cavity; do not use metal tools to scrape.
Store in a dry, temperature-controlled environment: Avoid moisture absorption, deformation, or low-temperature embrittlement.
