Precautions for Rapid Injection Molding Prototyping
Rapid injection molding prototyping is a highly efficient mold-making solution combining rapid prototyping technology and injection molding processes. This type of process has several key considerations regarding operation, mold making, and process control, which can be categorized as follows:
1. Operational Safety and Protection
Hazard Area Avoidance: Six high-risk areas, including the feed area, material pipeline area, nozzle area, and mold area, requires focused protection to avoid contact with high-temperature, high-pressure moving parts.
Standardized Operation Requirements: Do not insert foreign objects into the rotating high-temperature screw to prevent burns from high-temperature material pipelines and to avoid the risk of molten material splashing from the high-pressure nozzle.
2. Mold Making and Adaptation
Mold Selection and Matching: Select the appropriate mold type based on the trial production batch. Soft molds are suitable for small batches, bridge molds are suitable for production of thousands of pieces, and hard molds are suitable for large-scale verification.
Precision and Detail Control: Cavity and core machining tolerances should be controlled within ±0.005mm, and surface roughness Ra≤0.8um to avoid mold sticking or dimensional deviations.
Cooling and Venting Optimization: Cooling channels are flush with the mold cavity to ensure uniform cooling; venting grooves with a depth of 0.01-0.02mm are installed in the melt filling area to prevent air bubbles and material shortage.
3. Injection Molding Process Control
Raw Material Pretreatment: Hygroscopic raw materials are thoroughly dried as required to ensure a moisture content ≤0.02%, sieved to remove impurities, and mixed materials are prohibited.
Precise Parameter Setting: Injection speed and pressure are set appropriately to match rapid mold filling requirements, and holding pressure is controlled at approximately 85% of the maximum filling pressure.
Standardized Demolding Operation: Ejector pins or stripper plates are used for demolding, with ejection positions evenly distributed in the area of highest strength of the plastic part to avoid uneven demolding force leading to deformation.
4. Quality and Maintenance
First Article Inspection: The dimensional accuracy, surface quality, and mechanical properties of the prototype part are inspected to confirm compliance with design requirements.
Regular Calibration: The temperature control system and pressure sensors are calibrated weekly, and the nozzles, runners, and venting grooves are cleaned regularly to ensure equipment accuracy.
