The Three Core Aspects of ABS Plastic Manufacturing Process
The ABS plastic manufacturing process mainly consists of three core stages: resin synthesis, modification and granulation, and final molding. The process parameters and control points differ significantly between these stages. The following are the key technical details for each stage:
1. ABS Resin Synthesis Process
ABS is a terpolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. There are two main industrial production processes:
Emulsion Grafting Method: Butadiene is first emulsified to produce a rubber latex. Then, acrylonitrile and styrene are added for graft copolymerization. The resulting ABS powder can be blended with SAN. This is currently the most widely used production process, producing products with balanced toughness, suitable for general-purpose ABS production.
Bulk Polymerization Method: The three monomers are directly polymerized in a solvent system in a continuous bulk polymerization process. This method is simpler, has lower impurity content, and produces products with higher gloss. It is often used for the production of high-gloss ABS products.
2. Modified Granulation Process
Granulation is a crucial intermediate step connecting the base resin and the final product, used to produce ABS granules with different properties. The complete process is as follows:
Ingredient Premixing: The ABS base resin, colorant, antioxidant, flame retardant, toughening agent, and other functional additives are precisely weighed according to the formula and thoroughly premixed in a high-speed mixer.
Melt Blending: The mixture is fed into a twin-screw extruder. The shearing action of the screws ensures thorough dispersion of the components. The processing temperature is controlled at 200-280℃, varying depending on the ABS grade: general grade 220-250℃, flame-retardant grade 200-240℃, heat-resistant grade 240-280℃.
Vacuum Deviation: The vacuum section of the extruder extracts residual monomers and volatiles from the material, preventing defects such as bubbles and silver streaks in subsequent products.
Strip pelletizing: Molten material is extruded from the die into strips, cooled by water, and then fed into a pelletizer to be cut into uniform cylindrical particles. Finally, the particles are screened and packaged to obtain finished ABS particles.
3. Final Injection Molding Process
This is the most mainstream process for processing ABS particles into final products. Key control points are as follows:
Raw Material Pretreatment: ABS has a water absorption rate of 0.2%-0.8%. Before processing, it needs to be baked at 75-85℃ for 2-4 hours to control the moisture content below 0.05%, preventing silver streaks and bubbles from appearing on the product surface.
Temperature Control: The barrel is heated in sections, gradually increasing from 160-180℃ at the rear section to 210-260℃ at the nozzle to avoid localized overheating that could lead to material degradation. The mold temperature is maintained at 40-85℃. For high-gloss products, the mold temperature can be appropriately increased to 70-80℃ to optimize surface quality.
Pressure and Parameter Settings: The injection pressure is typically 80-150MPa, the holding pressure is set to 30%-80% of the injection pressure, and the back pressure is controlled at 5-15MPa. The screw speed is 30-80 r/min to avoid excessive shear heat from excessive speed, which could lead to material decomposition.
Post-processing and quality control: After the product cools and is demolded, internal stress can be eliminated through annealing; finally, it needs to go through dimensional inspection, pressure testing, drop testing and other processes to ensure that the performance of the finished product meets the standards.
