Materials and Properties of Injection Molding Medical Plastics

injection molding medical plastics

Injection molding medical plastics is a key process in medical device manufacturing. It involves heating and melting thermoplastic medical plastics, injecting the melt into a mold, and then cooling and solidifying it to form high-precision, high-performance medical parts. The following are commonly used materials and properties for injection molding medical plastics:

1. Polypropylene (PP)

Properties: Non-toxic, odorless, chemically resistant, excellent heat resistance (melting point approximately 171℃), stable mechanical properties.

Applications: Disposable syringes, infusion sets, prescription bottles, connectors, etc.

Advantages: Low cost, can withstand autoclaving, suitable for large-scale production.

2. Polyethylene (PE)

Properties: High mechanical strength, good ductility, chemically resistant, but poor thermal stability.

Applications: Medical packaging, intravenous injection containers, artificial urethras, etc.

Advantages: Excellent processing performance, suitable for various molding processes.

3. Polycarbonate (PC)

Properties: Highly transparent, tough, heat-resistant (can withstand 120℃ steam sterilization), good biocompatibility.

Applications: IV connectors, blood centrifuge bowls, medical device housings, etc. Advantages: Combining high strength and transparency, suitable for precision parts manufacturing.

4. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)

Characteristics: High temperature resistance (approximately 260℃), high strength, chemical corrosion resistance, and excellent biocompatibility.

Applications: Implants, surgical instruments, orthopedic parts, etc.

Advantages: High long-term stability, suitable for high-end medical fields.

5. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene Copolymer (ABS)

Characteristics: High rigidity, impact resistance, smooth surface, and easy processing.

Applications: Medical instrument housings, equipment accessories, etc.

Advantages: Low cost, can replace metal parts, reducing equipment weight.

6. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

Characteristics: Flexible or rigid options available, chemical corrosion resistance, and good flame retardancy.

Applications: Hemodialysis equipment, tubing, cardiac catheters, etc.

Advantages: Versatile, adaptable to different medical scenarios.
