Advantages of Polystyrene Injection Molding

polystyrene injection molding

Polystyrene injection molding offers significant technological advantages and superior product performance characteristics. These advantages are primarily reflected in the following aspects, analyzed in detail based on material properties and processing technology:

1. Superior Processing Performance

Excellent Flowability and High Molding Efficiency: PS is an amorphous polymer with low melt viscosity and excellent flowability, allowing for rapid filling of complex mold cavities. It is particularly suitable for thin-walled, slender, or finely structured products. The melt is sensitive to shear rate; adjusting injection speed and pressure optimizes filling, reducing defects such as short shots and insufficient fill, shortening the molding cycle, and improving production efficiency.

Low Molding Shrinkage and Strong Dimensional Stability: PS has a molding shrinkage rate of only 0.4%-0.7%, far lower than polypropylene (PP, 1.0%-2.5%) and polycarbonate (PC, 0.5%-0.8%). This results in high dimensional accuracy and good repeatability, making it suitable for mass production of precision parts. The low shrinkage rate also reduces warping caused by uneven shrinkage, making it particularly suitable for large, flat products.

Wide Thermal Stability and Processing Window: PS has a melt temperature range of 180-280℃, allowing for flexible processing temperature selection. The barrel temperature can be adjusted according to the product structure (e.g., 185-220℃ for GPPS, 190-240℃ for HIPS), reducing equipment energy consumption. Its decomposition temperature is as high as 290℃, making it difficult to decompose under normal injection molding conditions, extending equipment lifespan and reducing cleaning frequency.

2. Outstanding Product Performance:

High transparency and excellent optical properties: General-purpose polystyrene (GPPS) has a light transmittance of 88%-92%, close to glass (92%), and good surface gloss, making it suitable for producing transparent containers, optical parts, and daily necessities. Transparency can be further optimized by controlling mold temperature and cooling rate, reducing defects such as crystal points and flow marks.

High Surface Hardness and Strong Scratch Resistance: PS products have a surface hardness of up to 2H (pencil hardness), higher than polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), exhibiting excellent wear resistance, suitable for products requiring long-term appearance maintenance. High hardness also enhances product rigidity, allowing it to maintain shape stability even in thin-walled structures.

3. Significant cost-effectiveness

Low raw material cost and high cost-performance ratio: PS is one of the cheaper varieties of general-purpose plastics, with raw material costs only 1/3 to 1/2 that of polycarbonate (PC) and 1/2 that of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), making it suitable for cost-sensitive large-scale production. HIPS improves impact strength by adding rubber components, but its cost is still lower than ABS, making it an economical alternative to engineering plastics.

Low processing energy consumption and simple equipment requirements: PS injection molding does not requires high temperature and high pressure (injection pressure 60-150MPa), requiring lower tonnage injection molding machines. Small and medium-sized equipment can meet production needs, reducing equipment investment costs. Low moisture absorption (<0.05%) reduces the need for drying pretreatment, further saving energy and time.

High recyclability and environmental advantages: PS is recyclable and reusable. The performance of recycled materials is close to that of virgin materials, and they can be re-injected through simple cleaning and granulation, reducing waste disposal costs. Recycled modified PS (such as HIPS) can be used to produce low-requirement products, realizing resource recycling.
