The Technology and Characteristics of Plastic Welding Process

Plastic welding process is a technique for permanently joining two or more thermoplastic products through heat, pressure, or mechanical movement. Common processes include hot gas welding, hot tool welding, ultrasonic welding, laser welding, friction welding, resistance implant welding, induction heating welding, and solvent welding. The following are several common plastic welding processes and their characteristics:

1. Hot Gas Welding:

Principle: Hot air or nitrogen from a welding torch heats the plastic workpiece and the plastic welding rod. The rod fills the joint, then heats the surface. After cooling, the joint is formed.

Characteristics: This is the longest-standing and most widely used method, but the welding speed is relatively slow. It requires equipment such as a welding torch, nozzle, gas source, and filler rod.

2. Hot Tool Welding:

Principle: A high-temperature tool is used to heat the joining surfaces, softening them fully. Appropriate pressure is then applied and clamped. After cooling, a tight connection is achieved.

Characteristics: Fast joining speed and high joint strength are achieved, but stress may exist near the joint.

3. Ultrasonic Welding:

Principle: Ultrasonic waves pass through the joined parts, causing friction between the contacting surfaces. The generated heat melts the workpiece surfaces, achieving the connection. Features: High joint strength, fast welding speed, high degree of automation, and aesthetically pleasing weld seams, but weld size and shape are limited.

4. Laser Welding:

Principle: A high-power laser beam is used to melt and join the plastic surfaces.

Features: High welding speed and precision. The welding device does not contact the plastic, allowing for welding inaccessible areas. However, the equipment cost is high.

5. Friction Welding:

Principle: The joining is achieved by utilizing heat generated by friction between the joining surfaces. Methods include rotary friction welding, linear vibration friction welding, and stir friction welding.

Features: High joining speed, suitable for large and thick plates, and minimal joint deformation. However, specialized equipment and complex fixtures are required.

6. Resistor Implant Welding:

Principle: A conductive resistor material is placed at the weld interface. Welding pressure is applied and an electric current is passed through the resistor material, melting the plastic at the weld interface and achieving a joint.

Features: Simple equipment and easy operation. However, residual resistor wire in the weld joint, which is incompatible with the plastic, may reduce weld strength and corrosion resistance.

7. Induction Welding:

Principle: An electromagnetic field is used to heat a metal insert, softening the plastic near the insert. Upon cooling, a joint is formed.

Features: Rapid heating with minimal impact on the parent material. However, internal stresses can easily form in the joint, reducing corrosion resistance.

8. Solvent Welding:

Principle: A solvent is used to soften amorphous thermoplastics. The joint is completed when the solvent is completely depleted and evaporates.

Features: The joint strength can reach the strength of the parent material. The welding equipment required is simple, easy to operate, and low-cost. However, some solvents are toxic and harmful to the human body.
