What should be Paid Attention to in Plastic Molding Process?

plastic molding process

Plastic molding process of transforming plastic raw materials into products of desired shapes, involving multiple stages and complex factors. To ensure product quality, improve production efficiency, and reduce costs, the following key points should be noted:

1. Raw Material Selection and Preparation

Raw Material Compatibility: Select suitable plastic raw materials based on the intended use, performance requirements, and environmental conditions of the product. For example, food packaging requires non-toxic plastics that meet food-grade standards; outdoor products require plastics with good weather resistance. Consider the processing properties of the raw materials, such as melt flow index and flowability, to ensure a smooth molding process.

Raw Material Quality: Ensure the raw materials are pure, free of impurities, moisture, and volatiles to avoid defects such as bubbles and cracks during molding. Pre-treat the raw materials, such as drying and screening, to improve their quality and consistency.

Additive Usage: Add plasticizers, stabilizers, lubricants, colorants, and other additives as needed to improve the performance and processability of the plastic. Pay attention to the dosage and ratio of additives to avoid excessive use that could lead to decreased product performance or increased costs.

2. Mold Design and Manufacturing

Mold Structure Rationality: The mold structure should be simple and rational, facilitating processing, assembly, and maintenance. Ensure accurate mold cavity dimensions and a smooth surface to reduce dimensional errors and surface defects in the finished product.

Runner and Gate Design: The runner design should be rational to ensure that the molten plastic can uniformly and quickly fill the mold cavity. The location, number, and size of the gate should be optimized according to the shape and size of the product to avoid defects such as weld lines and bubbles.

Ventilation System Design: Appropriate venting channels or venting holes should be set in the mold to expel gases generated during the molding process, preventing bubbles or surface defects inside the product.

Mold Material Selection: Select suitable mold materials, such as steel or aluminum alloys, based on the characteristics of the plastic raw material and the requirements of the molding process. Ensure that the mold material has sufficient hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance to extend the mold's service life.

3. Molding Process Parameter Control

Temperature Control: Strictly control the barrel temperature, mold temperature, and molten plastic temperature to ensure that the plastic is in a suitable molten state during the molding process. Excessive temperature may cause plastic decomposition, discoloration, or increased shrinkage of the product; excessively low temperature may result in poor plastic flow, incomplete mold filling, or a rough product surface.

Pressure control: Properly control process parameters such as injection pressure, holding pressure, and back pressure to ensure that the molten plastic fully fills the mold cavity and maintains the required shape and size. Excessive pressure may cause flash, increased internal stress, or mold damage; insufficient pressure may result in incomplete mold filling or unstable dimensions.

Time control: Precisely control process parameters such as injection time, holding time, cooling time, and mold opening time to ensure that the product fully solidifies during molding and maintains the required shape and size. Excessive time may lead to reduced production efficiency, product deformation, or accelerated mold wear; insufficient time may result in incomplete product solidification or unstable dimensions.

Speed control: Properly control process parameters such as injection speed and screw speed to ensure that the molten plastic fills the mold cavity uniformly and quickly. Excessive speed may result in a rough product surface, obvious weld lines, or mold damage; excessively slow speed may result in incomplete mold filling or reduced production efficiency.
