Quality Control of Polypropylene Injection Molding

polypropylene injection molding

Quality control in polypropylene injection molding requires attention to multiple aspects, including raw material preparation, mold design, equipment and process parameter settings, and production process monitoring. Specifically:

1. Raw Material Preparation and Quality Control

Raw Material Selection: Choose homopolymer or copolymer PP based on product requirements. Homopolymer PP has high rigidity and hardness, suitable for manufacturing high-strength structural components; copolymer PP has excellent toughness and impact resistance, suitable for manufacturing products requiring resistance to frequent impacts.

Raw Material Drying: Although PP is not highly hygroscopic, when the ambient humidity exceeds 60%, a raw material moisture content exceeding 0.05% will affect injection molding quality. Therefore, the raw material needs to be dried before injection molding. The drying temperature is generally controlled at 75-85℃ for 2.5-3.5 hours.

Additive Usage: Products intended for outdoor use require the addition of UV stabilizers and carbon black fillers to improve weather resistance; the proportion of recycled materials should be controlled below 15% to avoid strength reduction and discoloration.

2. Mold Design and Quality Control

Mold Temperature Control: The mold temperature should be maintained between 50-90℃. For products with high dimensional requirements, a higher mold temperature helps improve crystallinity and dimensional accuracy. The core temperature should be at least 5℃ lower than the cavity temperature to reduce internal stress and deformation.

Runner and Gate Design: The recommended runner diameter is 4-7mm, and the pin gate length is 1-1.5mm, with a diameter as small as 0.7mm. The mold must have good venting; the vent depth should be between 0.025-0.038mm to avoid shrinkage marks and air bubbles.

Cooling System Design: The mold should be designed with reasonable cooling channels to ensure uniform cooling speed and reduce deformation and warping caused by uneven cooling.

3. Equipment, Process Parameter Settings, and Quality Control

Injection Molding Machine Selection: PP has high crystallinity, requiring a computer-controlled injection molding machine with high injection pressure and multi-stage control. The clamping force is generally calculated at 3800t/m2, and the injection volume can be between 20%-85%.

Temperature Settings: Barrel temperature: rear section 160-180℃, middle section 185-210℃, front section 210-235℃; nozzle temperature 195-225℃. Mold temperature is set according to product requirements, generally between 50-90℃.

Pressure Control: Injection pressure is generally controlled between 70-120MPa, and holding pressure is approximately 40%-60% of the injection pressure. Holding time should be determined according to product thickness and size, generally between 1-10 seconds.

Speed Control: Injection speed should be moderate. Excessive injection speed may cause melt fracture and surface defects, while excessively slow speed will prolong the molding cycle. Generally, injection speed is controlled between 30-60mm/s.

Screw Speed: Screw speed is generally controlled between 30-60rpm to ensure sufficient material plasticization and prevent overheating degradation.

4. Production Process Monitoring and Quality Control

First Article Inspection: A comprehensive inspection of the first article is conducted before production to ensure that appearance, dimensions, and performance meet requirements.

Patrol Inspection and Self-Inspection: Quality inspectors should conduct regular patrols of the production process, randomly checking product appearance and key dimensions; operators should perform 100% visual self-inspection of the products they produce.

Key Parameter Monitoring: Utilize the equipment's built-in control system or an external data acquisition system to monitor and record key process parameters such as injection pressure, injection speed, melt temperature, and mold temperature in real time.

Product Identification and Traceability: Each product should be clearly and uniquely identified, indicating the production date, shift, machine number, etc., to ensure product quality traceability.
